In 2018 Tiktok merged with the app Musical.ly, a popular lip-singing app. Tiktok gained a wider array of audiences including celebrities. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tiktok had a rise of popularity. This was Tiktok’s final push to becoming a mainstream social media app.

Among Us was developed by the Indie studio Innersloth and was originally released in 2018. However Among Us gained popularity in the Summer of 2020, due to children not being able to go outside because of COVID-19. Many children found this game to be able to socialize with their friends, while also keeping distance. Among Us was very influential because it popularized the social deduction game genre.

The Italian Brainrot trend was popularized by children of this decade. Italian Brainrot is the creation of AI generated characters with nonsensical Italian sounding names, and AI generated Italian-accented voices telling absurd stories. Italian Brainrot is very popular among the younger generations.
